THE GREEN MOVEMENT’S 7-POINT MARKETING STRATEGY
POINT ONE: an impassioned plea to “stop pollution” and “save the environment” to “protect our children’s children” against the “ravages of uncontrolled development.” This emotional appeal puts all dissenting voices into the same category as unscrupulous developers and vicious polluters. It demonizes any who question the plea as being destroyers or shills for destroyers.
POINT TWO: recruit experts, who widely dispense wisdom to the ignorant masses. This indoctrination campaign teaches people to feel guilty about their material needs and their personal ambitions, explaining that everything we human beings do ends up harming nature in some way, and implanting the subliminal equations, Nature = Good; Human = Bad.
POINT THREE: generate clamor, endlessly repeating Points 1 & 2 so average citizens become intensely opposed to growth and development. The clamor is designed to drown out balanced judgment and quiet reflection on the merits, source and intent of the message. The clamor message always directs attention to the content (what you are supposed to think) and never to the context (any wider agenda behind the message, who benefits, consequences of following the message).
POINT FOUR: bait and switch: while publicly clamoring for nature protection laws, privately persuading the power elite that government control over all business activity and private conduct is the only solution to the problem. The public bait is promotion of “reasonable rules” and “proper regulations,” while the private switch is giving ever more intrusive power to the government and gaining ever more influence with the regulators.
POINT FIVE: Outspoken vilification of opponents. As segments of the public become aware of the larger Green agenda, opposition gains strength, and Greens find it necessary to portray opponents as reactionary, mean-spirited, destructive nature-rapists and short-sighted fast-buck artists whose every argument is unworthy of a public hearing. Greens recognize that the economic well-being created by business and industry, and the individual liberties enabled by a free economy are powerful forces that can be mobilized against their agenda, and that they must ridicule, then devalue, and ultimately destroy those who rise to confront them in the name of freedom and economic well-being.
POINT SIX: Incremental expansion of control. Legislative strategy calls for the progressive expansion of government controls over every factory and office, over every square inch of private property, and over every aspect of private conduct. Patience and long-term persistence in the face of political realities require Greens to build institutional memory that can bridge decades of failure, to develop a vast non-profit financial support system with wealthy foundations to exploit sudden changes or opportune weaknesses, and to train leaders to mobilize their memberships for mass action on call.
POINT SEVEN: The agenda must be kept hidden at all costs. Public knowledge of the economic and political destruction inherent in the Green agenda could create widespread distrust, rejection, abandonment, and ultimate shutdown of Green groups everywhere. True believers cannot allow that to happen, so they deny that their goals will put you forever at the mercy of an officialdom that holds government power as representatives of nature more sacred than your liberty and economic survival.
